Who needs Speech Therapy?
Speech Therapy is for those who are interested in improving their communication skills. If you are worried that your child may be behind their peers or if you want to provide extra support that will help them in their schooling and life pursuits, it is worth looking into what supports they can receive.
What are the benefits of speech-language therapy in the home?
Receiving speech-language therapy in the home positively increases the effectiveness of treatment in many ways. Not only are children more at ease in their home environment and more willing to talk and try new skills, naturalistic home environments support generalization of techniques to everyday situations. The children's own possessions can be used in therapy increasing the personal relevance of sessions. The involvement of parents, family and caregivers is increased. As they observe and participate in sessions, family members learn techniques implemented by the speech-language pathologist, which they can encourage the children to use throughout the week. This continuity of care extends the therapeutic effect by increasing practice time and intensity. Another benefit of in-home speech-language therapy is that it reduces the burden on the child and family for travel time and physical activity, allowing them to spend more time and energy focusing on learning and practicing speech-language skills.
Does my child need Speech Therapy?
An overall discussion of your concerns, and later an observation of their abilities and difficulties, will help determine if your child needs therapy. In order to determine if your child needs speech therapy, contact us for a free consultation.
How long will my child need speech therapy?
Students progress at different rates, depending largely on the severity of the delay or disorder as well as other variables.  Speech-language therapy can last as long as there are goals to target, but the goal of Airdrie Speech Path is to help individuals through therapy as quickly as possible.  Constant parent communication allows the therapist to target the goals of highest priority and adapt to the schedules and circumstances of the family.
What if we are already receiving services elsewhere?
You can absolutely have private speech therapy at Airdrie Speech Path while receiving services elsewhere.  Many clients have sought out Airdrie Speech Path to supplement what their children are receiving at school.  The high level of parental involvement and therapy provided in the natural home setting contribute to significant gains that are difficult to get in other therapy settings.  The more therapy an individual receives, the more progress the individual will make.
How can I pay for therapy services?
Many insurance companies include speech-language therapy in the benefits they cover.  Airdrie Speech Path provides receipts that can be submitted to your insurance provider for reimbursement.  Payment is accepted via cash, cheque or e-transfer on a per session or per month basis.Â
Airdrie Speech Path can also help parents apply for government funding for those children who meet the eligibility requirements for Family Supports for Children with Disabilities (FSCD).  If the children are approved by FSCD, then they may qualify for government funding for speech-language services.
What happens during the free consultation?
During the free 20 minute phone call consult, parents discuss with the therapist regarding their child’s greatest areas of need.  The therapist outlines developmental milestones, methods of treatment and answers any questions the parents may have.  Together, they begin to set initial goals for therapy.
